Coin Tips

Coin Cleaning

Never clean your coins. There are several products that can be bought to do this, however the value of your coins will go down. Cleaning silver or copper coins should never be done. There are several silver cleaners available that will destroy your coin. Leaving the original patina on your coins increases the value, even if they look dirty.

Coin Books to buy and Not to Buy

Many People looking for the value of there coins will purchase a book called the RED BOOK. This Book is not a good book for someone wishing to sell their coins. It does give you prices for for your coins however the  prices in this book are dealer prices that the coins sold for at a coin dealers store or high end coin auction (not ebay). This is not what you should expect to get for your coins. You are not a dealer afterall, and don't have the overhead that the dealer does. All coin dealers use what is called a grey sheet which gives them a guidline as to what the coin should be purchased for. This grey sheet has prices listed below wholesale. if you are looking for a pricing book I would suggest and recommend  the BLUE BOOK. This book is some where in the middle, and will give you more relistic pricing.

General Coin Care

Never clean them, we allready covered that. Keep coins in a very dry atmosphere. Cool and dry is best. If you have coins that are in soft plastic be sure that this isn't PVC. PVC flipps can and eventually will damage your coins. Coins that are in books should always be kept flat and not standing on end. You should never touch the surface of any coin silver or not. your fingers have oils in them that can damage the surface of all coins. Allways try to hold your coins by the edge to prevent such damage.
